ARTIST STATEMENT

The frustration of how society often overlooks subjects that don’t fit in the dangerously minimal margins is what fuels me to create what I create today. I am more inclined to creating disturbing or interesting things such as animals with human-like features/anatomy to evoke a strong emotion of unsettlement to let the viewer have a different feeling compared to more ordinary subjects.

I use ‘weird’ things to draw out awareness that these things are already out there, and are more often neglected by society. Being a trans non binary, doing out-of-the-ordinary things helps me feel more recognized and seen than what society has failed to do to for a lot of subcultures in general. I pull from the constant issues that are faced in everyday life due to not fitting in societies. Because of this lack of support from society, individuals from these cultures feel less represented. By choosing a more unsettling approach, it singles out a more uncommon emotion in viewers to help connect and recognize the uncommon identity.

I use mainly traditional studio-based dry medias, but now that there are other medias available, I particularly enjoy ceramics and printmaking the most because of the seemingly endless possibilities that you can create. I use the flexibility of these skills through different mediums to express how I feel through the constant discovery of self and to display emotions that are felt through exploring gender identity, individualism.
